己を知る、いささか行き詰ってはいるもののぼくは急いでいません。とりあえず３カ月分の生活費を稼ぎ済みなので、９月一杯かかっても仕方がないか、と腹をくくっております。で、このごろ気になるペリー・マーシャルのメールを見ていたら、己を知るとどんなことが起こるのか、それが入ってました。それほど長い文章ではないので引用しておきましょう。きっかけは人それぞれなんです。そのきっかけを見極める状況にあなｔなお 心があるかどうか、それが問題なんですよ。
“ これまでで一番の底辺に身をおいた頃の話したことがあるか、あまり自信はないけれども、まぁその頃の話をさし上げよう。
ローラとぼくは７月４日独立記念日のウィークエンドに、シカゴからネブラスカに向かってつい３ヶ月前にエンジンが不調に陥った１９８５年ホンダシビックに乗って走っていたと思ってくれたまえ、念のためにシビックは１２００ドルで購入したとも教えておこうかね。
ガソリン買うにしたって気楽なもんじゃなかった、まだ拒否食らわずにいけるかどうか賭けみたいもんだった、そうクレジットカードの限度を気にする毎日だったわけなんだ。ごく小さな製造会社の製造課長に営業から格下げされたばかりの状況。 コミッションを稼ぐチャンスが失われたわけだ。 差額を埋めるために外注組立を自ら請け負って自宅に持って帰る有様。
その週末の請負仕事はスクリュー・ドライバーを使う小ぶりな仕事だった。部品の入った箱を車に積み込んでのドライブだ。一人がドライブ中にもう一人が組立仕事をやる。 一個当たり工賃４セント。 ５０００個作るといくらになる？ やっほー・・・・・。
アイオワ州のほぼど真ん中で突如エンジン音が変わり、パタパタという類いの音を出し始めた。 そのまま夜を過ごすことになるとは思ってもいなかったが、そういうこと。 もちろんホテルに泊まる金などない。 セダー・ラピッドに義理の弟がいたので、頼み込んで一晩過ごすことになった。
夕食も済んで一段落しているとき、義理の弟がこんなことを言い出した。「この前会った時、あんた若手営業部長候補みたいなこと言ってなかったかい？給料だって悪かぁないんだろ？」 唇を噛み、 TVを見ながら外注仕事をやるっきゃない、これはつらかったよね。
クルマの故障は給油フィルターだったのだが、ド田舎に外車のあまり故障の例のない部品なんぞあるわけはないさ、結局修理にもう一日そのまま泊まるしかない状況になったんだな。 社長に電話し、出勤できない理由を説明しなけりゃならなかった。だめセールスマンが もうすぐのところまで行っちまったんだよ。
一体全体２年間何も売れないセールスを雇う奴がどこにいる？いったいどんなエンジニアリング会社が２年間もエンジニアリングから離れて営業やってた人間を雇うかね？ あっちむいてほい！ どこに筋道が見える？ 落とし穴にはまり込んで身動きできない、まさしくそんな感じだったんだよ。
長い話を短く縮めて、６ヵ月後・・・、
シカゴ、ミシガン湖から氷のような風の吹く１月の夕刻６時半だった。あたりの人間は皆帰宅。 ぼくと、新しい部長のマイク二人だけが残っていた。 売上も良い日だった。 ちょうど１２月分のコミッションを受取ったばかりで、もう一つ言えば１２月には、これまでもらったことがないほどに金額を稼いでいた。
帰りが遅くなる。 ・・・としてもローラも今回は許してくれるはずだ。 明日オフィスに入るときには先月同様に新しいセールスリードが机に乗っていて、 大いなる機会と大いなる楽しみを与えてくれるはず・・・・・。マイクとはこんな話をしていた、 「ペリー、ペリー、さてさて、わが社は君に引き続き勤務していただくためにどうすりゃ良いのかな？」
それまでの１８０日間にぼくは人生を１８０度転換できていたんだ。
自分に向かってこういい続けた。自分、君とぼく、はこれになれるはずだよ。 実際におきていることなのかい、これが？ 事実である。 この時の自分の上機嫌さ加減をうまく言える言葉なぞ、どこにもないのだよ。 そして、見返りの多い新しいシーズンが始まったんだ。 誰かの役に立つ、自分にぴったりの居場所を見つける、そして落ち込んでいた深い落とし穴からの脱出を図る、素敵なシーズン。
先週ぼくはドレートン・バード、かの有名なる英国の広告エージェント、とコンファレンス・コールした。 彼のいわく「人間いいときには悪習を身につける、 悪いときには良き習慣を身につける」 たしかに・・・。
先ほどお話したアイオワでの経験が、ぼくに必要のない何かを捨てさせるチャンスをくれた、と考えてる。もちろんそのときには「必要がない」などとは想像すらできなかったものをね。でもたしかにぼくの前進を引き戻そうとする何かがあったんだ。 それまで自分に質問することすら恐れていた質問を始めると、そして周囲の人たちからの言葉を素直に受取れるようになると、周囲が変わり、自分も変わり、 そう、大急ぎで変わっていく。そりゃあ見事なもんだ。
現在絶好調の人たちがいる。でも足元を見てみれば、ほとんどの人たちが限度一杯のクレジット・カード借入、決心してくれないお客、そして崩壊しつつあるシステムにしがみついているだけだとぼくは見ている。
システムを改修するときが来ている。市場は君がこれまでの考え方を捨てて、別の新しい考え方を受け入れるよう促している、ただしその新しいことをこれまでのリソースを使って実行するように迫っている。だってほかの選択肢はないだろ？
ただし、有難いことに、君自身いまの知識の範囲を拡大できるチャンスも合わせて提供されている。君が解決しようとしている問題のほとんどが、すでにどこかの、だれかが解決済みだ。 君が今持っているリソースを新しい組合せて提供することができれば、１０倍以上の価値を提供することもできるのだよ。新しいシステム、そうだろ？
君の身近な誰かに、いま君の持っているスキルやノウハウを提供することで大変に感謝されることがあるはずだ。
もう一つうれしくなることを申し上げるならば、リソースが１００％相手に適合する必要などどこにもない。 胡椒のぴりっとした舌ざわりは、胡椒のつぶをいきなり口に入れても得られない。全体にふりかけられているからよろしい。 のこりは自らの味付けで出来上がる。いかがかな？君の能力のせいぜい１０％－１５％を活用すればよろしい。
そして入れから申し上げることこそ、銀行に預金を積み上げる助けになると考えるのだが・・・。君を除く全世界が混沌としており騒然と何かが起こることを待つうちに、ぼくらには自分のオファーを考え直し、システムを再検討し、優先順位を変更すれば成功できるだけのリソースがある。 ぼくらは核になる部分を提供しているのだから、お客さまの観点が変わっても軸のぶれはない、はずだろ？
ぼくらは泣き言なんぞ聞きたくもない、だろ？ぼくらは朝刊を読んでるわけでもない、だろ？ ぼくらは今朝起きてからずっと、絶対的なものを対象にして考えを集中している、ちがうかい？ 正しいものの上にすべてを築こうとしている、だろ？
今日は2011年３月１日、ぼくらは過去１８０日間を振り返る。我が良き友よ、最後に勝つのは誰なんだ？自分に正しい質問さえすれば・・・、 それができさえすれば・・・、恐れてはいけない。 それともほかの誰かに勝ちを譲るのかい？ 君こそ勝利にふさわしい人間ではないのか？永遠に・・・_
